We made it through another North Carolina winter! While we didn't have a blizzard, the constant cycle of freezing nights and sunny days can be brutal on asphalt shingles. Now, as we head into spring, we face a new challenge: Rain.
March and April are typically wet months in the Rockingham area. Before the heavy downpours start, it is crucial to check if Old Man Winter left any "hidden gifts" on your roof that could turn into expensive leaks.
What is "Thermal Shock"? In NC, we often have days where it’s 60°F during the day and drops below freezing at night. This causes your shingles to expand and contract rapidly. Over time, this "thermal shock" can cause cracks that are invisible from the ground but let water seep in.
Your Spring Roof Checklist:
Check the Gutters for Granules: Next time you clean your gutters, look for an excessive amount of protective granules (the sand-like coating on shingles). If your gutters are full of them, your roof is aging and losing its waterproofing ability.
Look for "Lifted" Shingles: Winter winds can lift shingles just enough to break the sealant bond. A lifted shingle is an open door for wind-driven rain.
Inspect Flashing Around Chimneys: Metal flashing expands and contracts differently than wood or asphalt. Winter often causes these seals to pop loose. This is the #1 spot for spring leaks.
Interior Ceiling Check: Go into your attic or look at your ceilings on a sunny day. Do you see any dark spots or water stains? If you do, the leak has already started.
Don't Wait for the Drip The worst time to fix a roof is during a thunderstorm. Catching these small winter damages now is quick and affordable. Waiting until water is dripping into your living room is not.
