Why North Carolina Winters Can Be Sneaky for Your Roof

Here in North Carolina, we don't always get the heavy blizzards of the north, but that doesn't mean our roofs are safe from winter damage. In fact, our fluctuating weather—warm days followed by freezing nights—creates a unique challenge called the "Freeze-Thaw Cycle."
Here is why January and February are critical months for roof maintenance in our area.
The Expansion Problem
When it rains during the day and freezes at night, water that has seeped into tiny cracks in your shingles, chimney flashing, or gutters turns into ice. When water freezes, it expands. This expansion pushes cracks open wider. Over time, a microscopic crack becomes a major leak waiting for the next rainstorm.
The Threat of Ice Dams
While rarer in NC than in New York, ice dams can occur during our cold snaps. This happens when heat escapes from your attic, melts the snow on your roof, and the water refreezes at the gutters. This wall of ice traps water on your roof, forcing it to back up under the shingles and into your home.
Prevention: Proper attic insulation and ventilation are your best defense against ice dams.
Brittle Shingles
Asphalt shingles harden in cold temperatures. If a heavy branch falls on your roof during a winter storm, the impact is more likely to crack a shingle now than in the summer when the asphalt is pliable.
Is Your Roof Ready for the Rest of Winter? We still have several weeks of cold weather ahead. A professional inspection can identify:
Cracked flashing around chimneys.
Loose shingles.
Gutter blockages that cause ice buildup.
