Taking Down the Lights? Watch Out for These 3 Roof Damages

The holidays are over, and as we pack away the ornaments, it’s time to tackle the exterior lights. While putting them up is often done with care, taking them down in the cold January weather can sometimes lead to rushing—and that is when damage happens.
At Garcia's Superior Roofing, we often see roof issues in late winter that started with improper decoration removal. Here is what you need to watch out for this week.
1. The "Yank and Pull" Damage
It’s tempting to stand on the ladder (or the ground) and pull the cords to unclip them. However, if a clip is snagged on a shingle, pulling it can rip the protective granules off the shingle or even tear the shingle tab itself.
Tip: Take the time to unclip each light individually. If a shingle looks loose, don't ignore it.
2. Gutter Stress
Did you use heavy clips on your gutters? The weight of ice, snow, and heavy decorations combined can cause gutters to sag or pull away from the fascia board.
Tip: While you are up there, check if the gutters feel loose or if there is standing water (a sign of a clog or misalignment).
3. Punctures from Staples
If you used a staple gun to secure lights (which we never recommend!), removing those staples can leave tiny holes in your shingles or underlayment. These small holes are perfect entry points for melting snow and ice to seep into your attic.
The "New Year" Roof Check Once the decorations are down, take a step back and look at your roof. Do you see any missing granules in the gutters? Any lifted shingles?
Don't wait for the spring rains to find a leak. If you suspect your roof took a beating this holiday season, contact Garcia's Superior Roofing for a quick inspection. Start 2026 with peace of mind!
